In all my 33 years in this business, PH bonder is one of the most significant developments in the hair color industry. It literally revolutionized hair color and hair lightening results by minimizing the damage that occurs to natural hair during these processes. Sometimes the hair ends up even stronger and healthier than before hair coloring, and that is a small miracle! I speak not only as a professional stylist and then salon owner, but as a client who has very dark brown hair and has been highlighted to very blonde before PH bonders existed, and after. The difference in the resulting health of my hair can be described as dramatic.
As you can imagine there are more than one of these break-through products on the market nowadays. The three we use most often are Olaplex, B-3 by Brazilian Blow Out, and Redken PH bonder.
All of these products are very expensive and very worth it. They add an extra $25 to your color ticket on average.
B-3 is used as an additive to the color formula and works beautifully.
Olaplex takes more steps. #1 is added to the color formula. #2 is put on your hair after the color is shampooed out, and sits on your hair for 5-10 minutes, and then it is rinsed out. #3 you take home and is so very important in your daily maintenance to keep your hair looking shiny and healthy. It also helps keep your color from fading! A fabulous product to say the least.
Redken PH Bonder is an additive, but Redken has begun to include it inside its lightener and color products. Trail-blazing is a trademark of Redken that has persisted over the years!
PH Bonders protect the integrity of your hair during color treatments. Bonds in your hair are responsible for your hair’s strength and elasticity and these bonds can be broken when lightening or coloring as the cuticle is opened to allow the color to penetrate. PH Bonders prevent the damage this can cause, keeping the hair from breaking and increasing your hair’s strength. It smooths your hair’s cuticle layer which results in added shine and softness.
(Cuticle imbrications on your hair strand’s surface are, in their natural state, like the feather’s of a duck smooth and flat. The hair reflects light and is shiny. The cuticle layer is “roughed up” during coloring or lightening, resulting in damaged-looking hair. PH Bonders close that cuticle and return your hair to it’s shiny, natural state.)
